In other news, we have booked and paid for all our December stops in our mammoth road trip from Johannesburg to Upington to Durban and back. So, if anyone has recommendations of interesting and/or unusual things to do or see in Keimoes, Kakamas, Augrabies, Upington, Bloemfontein, Clarens and Durban, please feel free to send your suggestions my way!

It might be a bit far, but "The Eye" in Kuruman is amazing apparently. I will consult the Other Half and ask him. He spend some time doing field work in that part of the country...
oh and coincidentally, we've also just finalised our Dec holiday plans! Nicely done! :)
Oooh... It is! I've been there with TSC when we went to Vryburg for a wedding. I spent ages trying to photograph all the fishies ;-)

about looking for stuff - happens to me a lot. I know it's time for a big mug herbal tea when I start looking for my glasses, and then I realise that they're right there on my desk. Where I left them.
Sadly i've only been to UPington & durbs - and from what i've heard uShaka is a must? Not sure if it's up your alley tho.
Glad your dec is sorted - looks like a mad family Christmas on our farm again - which is great but as you know also has it's downsides!
Try looking for a clip to put your hair up - when your hair is already up with said clip!

Shayne: I've heard that about uShaka too. We may give it a look-see.
Shrinky: Glad I'm not the only one! We'll be gone for about three weeks in total, but we'll be staying with TSC's family for a week of that, and my family for another week, so the actual road tripping is only about one week.
Slyde: I have. Twice. Once when I was a kid (New York City, Washington, Florida and the Caribbean) and again with TSC about three years ago, where we just went to Florida. I'd love to see New York as an adult, along with the Grand Canyon, New Orleans and other parts of the USA. I would love to eat crab in Baltimore and see Boston.

Doesn't the anticipation for a holiday just make everything till then seem so much better?
Be sure to check out Bezalel Wine & Brandy Estate on the N14 between Upington and Keimoes. We stopped there for a wine tasting, but was treated to a very informative tour and delicous breakfast as well. Their potstilled cognac and heavenly chocolate liqueur is a must!
My wife baught a jar of home-made Red Onion and Balsamic Marmelade while we were there and she's been nagging me to get some more ever since. haha.
Just look for the castle ruin on your left hand side... about 20 or so km from Upington.
Sakkie's Arkie and Witsand nature Reserve were great highlights too... I hope you guys have a safe journey, it really is a majestic area you're heading to!
Oh, the boerewors in the Northern Cape is the Best in the World. They do not stuff it as firmly as in the rest of SA. A must try.
I dont know those places very well at all! but sounds like its going to be fun
there's a place caled Hotazel just outside of Kuruman thata makes the best biltong EVER (not much else there unfortunately).
All around that area is the Orange River Wine Route which sounds like it might be worth looking into! Augrabies is completely amazingly beautiful, but staying there is pricy, so you might want to stop over somewhere nearby and take a day trip or something like that.
that whole part of the world is beautiful, so I'm sure you'll have tons to keep yourselves busy!

Helen: Thanks, friend. We're going to stay in Kakamas rather than Augrabies. Hopefully I'll be a pro on my new camera by the time we get to the falls so I can take some fab shots.
If you go that way, keep your eyes open for the sign for Matjiesfontein! Its where Standard Bank started and it has a fascinating museum in and under the station!
